Nexus between Coping Strategies and Households’ Agricultural Drought Resilience to Food Insecurity in South Africa

Farmers in Africa, including those South rely on rain-fed agriculture, which exposes them to the risks of agricultural drought. Agricultural drought has become a major threat production, extreme mortality livestock recent years, thus negatively impacting household food security. Hence, this paper is aimed at (i) assessing coping strategies employed by smallholding livestock-farming households during insecurity shocks, and (ii) relationship between resilience Northern Cape Province Africa. Interviews, more specifically survey interviews, were conducted with 217 smallholder farmers. The data was analyzed using index (ADRI), access scale (HFIAS), structural equation modeling. Smallholder farming utilized various strategies, ranging from selling (21%) leasing out their farms (1%). included alternative land (20%), storing requesting feed for animals (16%), searching employment (6%), migrating raising drought-tolerant breeds (5%), receiving relief grants (3%) savings investments (2%). A statistically significant means that these have important policy implications. Implementing encourage protect livelihood utilize assets (selling livestock) increase crucial reducing achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) end hunger poverty.
